For protection on land or in the air, AOPA-sponsored group life insurance offers coverage ranging from $10,000 to $1,000,000 at affordable group rates. For members in most states, preferred rates are up to 22 percent lower than standard rates. You may qualify for preferred rates when you apply for $100,000 or more and meet the preferred underwriting criteria. Insurance is available to members and spouses under age 65, with discounts of up to 50 percent for nonsmokers.

Designed for active pilots with a current medical certificate, the program covers most types of flying — with no aviation surcharge. Preferred rates require evidence of insurability every 10 years. Insurance may be renewed at standard rates — guaranteed. And, you may keep this coverage to age 80. (After age 70, the insurance amount reduces by 50% and following age 75, it reduces to 25% of the pre-70 amount.) At age 80, when the group insurance terminates, you may convert to an individual life insurance policy without providing any medical information.
